The article is devoted to the problem of dehydration in young athletes. We present data from the Russian and foreign literature on risk factors for water-electrolyte imbalance, the key methods of hydration control, the influence of the environment, the type of sport and the individual characteristics of an athlete on the likelihood of dehydration. The article also reflects modern ideas about the organization of an optimal drinking regime before, during and after training or competition, describes practical algorithms for rehydration, which have proven their effectiveness in numerous studies and are recommended for use in youth sports. The expediency of using sports drinks for physical exertion of varying intensity and duration is discussed; the influence of individual components of these drinks on the body functions of a young athlete, their performance and working capacity is also described.
Key words: drinking regimen, dehydration, athletes, rehydration.
