Uterine scar niche after cesarean section: risk factors, late obstetric consequences

The problem of isthmocele formation in the uterine scar after cesarean section is a pressing issue in modern obstetrics, as it is the most common complication of abdominal delivery. Isthmocele has a significant adverse impact on a woman’s life, impairing quality of life, negatively affecting fertility and the results of assisted reproductive technologies. Numerous studies have failed to provide a definitive answer to the etiopathogenesis of isthmocele, pointing only to certain putative risk factors. The main risk factors for isthmocele include the technique used to close the uterine wall, cervical dilation, duration of labor, and associated somatic pathologies. Timely and accurate diagnosis and identification of predictors contributing to the pathology development are among the key challenges in obstetrics in the near future.
