The purpose — to analyze published works on the use of chitosan in obstetric practice to stop postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and reduce the frequency of hysterectomies.
Material and methods. A review of publications in electronic resources in Russian and international systems (eLibrary, PubMed, MedLine, Google Scholar).
Results. Chitosan demonstrates high efficacy as a hemostatic: it provides rapid local hemostasis regardless of the coagulation cascade, stimulates platelet aggregation and fibrin formation, has anti-inflammatory and wound healing effects. Clinical data confirm the success of chitosan tamponade in postpartum hemorrhage — 91.3%, accompanied by a 75–78% reduction in the frequency of hysterectomies. The material is safe, biodegradable, and does not affect reproductive function.
Conclusion. The combination of chitosan’s unique properties opens up new opportunities in solving the problem of postpartum hemorrhage.
Key words: postpartum hemorrhage, hemostatic agent, chitosan, intrauterine balloon
