Ultrasound (US) of joints is a fast, accessible, cost-effective, informative method of examination. US-assisted examination of joint allows a clinician to assess the joint condition at the patient’s bedside as part of an objective examination.
The purpose — to evaluate the reproducibility of ultrasound-assisted joint examination in rheumatology in comparison with expert class ultrasound.
Material and methods. We compared the capabilities of expert-class ultrasound with ultrasound-assisted examination by 5 parameters (presence of effusion into the joint cavity, synovial vascularization, erosions, osteophytes and extensor muscle tenosynovitis) during ultrasound examination of wrist joints in 22 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Statistical analysis included Cohen’s kappa counting and construction of ROC curves by logistic regression method.
Results. Ultrasound-assisted examination is comparable to expert-class ultrasound in evaluating the inflammatory pattern. At the same time, ultrasound-assisted examination showed moderate comparability in evaluating degenerative changes and low comparability in evaluating destructive changes.
Key words: ultrasound-assisted examination, ultrasound of joint, rheumatoid arthritis.
