Transimmunization method in the treatment of multiple sclerosis

Objective ― to analyze the available domestic and foreign literature on the use of transimmunization and photopheresis in the treatment of autoimmune diseases in neurology.
Results. Extracorporeal photochemotherapy (ECP) or photopheresis is a method of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells outside the body. To increase the sensitivity of blood cells to UV irradiation, 8-methoxypsoralen is used. The technique was first published by Edelson R.L in 1984 and was used to treat lymphoma. The review presents data on application of the technique in various fields of medicine, including neurology for the treatment of myasthenia and multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system characterized by inflammation and demyelination, leading to the loss of axons, in the pathogenesis of which the role of T-lymphocytes is established. Currently, there are a lot of drugs which cause an immunomodulatory effect. However, treatment is not always effective. Such side effects as intolerance, formation of antibodies to these drugs, are possible. Therefore, the search for new methods of treatment is relevant. The mechanism of action of UV irradiation of lymphocytes of peripheral blood on the course of diseases is considered.
