Thyroid function in preterm children at the end of the first month of life

The article analyzes the concentration of hormones characterizing thyroid function at the end of the first month of life in preterm children. The study is based on 150 medical records of inpatients from the Neonatal Pathology Unit. It was shown that the free thyroxine (Free T4) concentration in preterm infants at the end of neonatal period is 19.2 (17.1; 21) pmol/L, and 4 (2.2; 5.8) mIU/L for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). We demonstrated a significant increase in blood free thyroxine levels with increasing weight and gestational age, as well as in hormone concentration in infants with small weight for gestational age. An association was proved between decreased blood thyroxine level and development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and retinopathy of premature babies. TSH did not demonstrate any associations with the studied parameters.
