The article presents the results of studying the carnitine metabolism in young athletes involved in cyclical sport (swimming), as well as game sport (field hockey). The study involved 41 athletes. Using the method of tandem chromatography-mass spectrometry, the levels of free carnitine and bound carnitine were determined. The results obtained in the two groups were statistically compared. It was found that in a group of hockey players (n=19), the level of free carnitine (C0) was significantly lower (p<0.001) than in the group of swimmers (n=22). A value of the acylcarnitines / free carnitine index, in turn, was significantly higher in the first group (p<0.001), which indirectly proves the relative deficiency of free carnitine.
Key words: carnitine, acylcarnitines, young athletes, carnitine metabolism.
