Objective ― to summarize the data of modern literature on the role of progesterone and tissue growth factors in the pathogenesis of uterine myomas.

Material and methods. Analysis of data from periodic sources of literature in relation to uterine fibroids. Studies that examine the genomic and non-genomic effects of progesterone receptors and their role in promoting the growth of myomatous nodes have been collected and systematized in this review. Studies on the effects of various progesterone receptor modulators for the treatment of uterine myomas have also been highlighted.

Results. Uterine leiomyoma is a benign tumor that originates from the myometrium. Research data show that ovarian steroid hormones, in particular progesterone, are the main regulators of development and growth of myomas. The effect of progesterone in fibroids involves the classical effects of nuclear receptors on gene regulation, but there is increasing evidence that the signaling pathways are directly activated by progesterone receptors (PR) and that PR can interact with signaling systems of growth factors, promoting proliferation and maintenance of uterine myomas.

Conclusion. Better understanding of the mechanisms that provide progesterone-dependent growth of myomatous nodes is necessary to create the most effective and safe methods of treatment for this widespread disease.

Key words: progesterone receptors, uterine leiomyoma, progesterone.
