The inframammary fold (IMF) is an important component of attractive and esthetically normal appearance of a breast, and one of the most important elements of natural breast ptosis. It plays a significant role in the formation and maintenance of a breast shape, and provides support for the implants placed subpectorally, which prevents their malposition. It is necessary to restore the IMF during breast reconstruction and it allows to achieve results similar to natural breasts. The existing IMF reconstruction methods have some disadvantages as well as advantages, therefore it is impossible to choose a particular method of reconstruction. We analyzed the importance of IMF for breast reconstruction and reviewed the modern restoration methods.
Key words: inframammary fold, breast reconstruction, inframammary fold anatomy, inframammary fold reconstruction, absence of breast.
