The paper presents the results of measurement of antimicrobial protein lactoferrin and antibacterial peptides defensins and сatelicidins in the oral fluid in 207 pregnant women with caries at various stages of gestational period. The control groups were healthy non-pregnant women (n=32) and healthy pregnant women without caries (n=31). The results of the study showed that pregnant women showd a steady increase of lactoferrin and сatelicidinLL37 in oral fluid during gestational period, which prevents the development of caries. However, reliable changes in the levels of defensins 1-3 in dynamics were not observed. The development of dental caries during pregnancy was associated with increases in the level of all three studied factors of innate immunity the mouth in the 2nd trimester, followed by a decline of defensins 1-3 and catelicidin LL37 in oral fluid. Therefore, the depletion of the reserves of the secretion defensins-1-3 and catelicidin LL37 by epithelial cells and neutrophils in the oral cavity contributed to the development of caries.
Key words: pregnancy, dental caries, oral fluid, antimicrobial protein, antibacterial peptides.
