Sonographic signs in determination of thyroid malignant nodes risk

Objective ― to assess the diagnostic value of ultrasound criteria indicating malignant nodes in thyroid gland.
Material and methods. The study was conducted on the materials of three centers of thyroid surgery in the Crimea during 2013-2017. The following criteria for analysis were selected: mild hypoechogenity, expressed hypoechogenicity, uneven/polycyclic borders, microcalcifications, «taller than wider» and the absence of thin «halo». The diagnostic value of the above criteria was defined. The study included 124 patients, of them 32 with a diagnosis of thyroid cancer and 92 with benign thyroid nodes. In partially cystic nodes, the presence of solid component was assessed.
Results. The study demonstrated the possibility of using all the criteria described in literature, except hypoechogenity. Its diagnostic value requires clarification. Also, attention should be paid to the absence of a thin halo around a node; it may be useful both for screening and targeted researches. In interpretation of thyroid nodes’ properties, the presence of two or more ultrasound criteria is more appropriate.
