Objective ― to study the clinical and epidemiological features of meningococcal infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W in the Moscow Region.

Material and methods. The analysis of the course of the generalized form of meningococcal disease (GFMD) caused by various serogroups of N. meningitidis in 843 patients aged two months to 86 years who were treated at State Budgetary Healthcare Institution «Infectious Clinical Hospital №2 of the Department of Healthcare of the city of Moscow» for 2011-2018 is carried out. The clinical and epidemiological features of the course of GFMD caused by meningococcus serogroup W (90 patients) were studied, taking into account the results of determining the sensitivity of the pathogen to antibacterial agents.

Results. It was found that GFMD caused by N. meningitidis serogroup W was characterized by a more severe course, frequent development of small focal pneumonia, difficulty in diagnosis, late hospitalization and long-term treatment and high mortality (16%).

Conclusion. The problem of meningococcal disease remains relevant. This is due to a change in the serogroup landscape of circulating meningococci causing GFMD, which is associated with a higher virulence of N. meningitidis serogroup W.

Key words: meningococcal disease, serogroup W meningococcus, polymerase chain reaction, clinical and epidemiological features, typing.
