Role of vitamin D in the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome

In the recent years, the role of vitamin D in maintaining human health has been actively studied. Given the bactericidal, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory effects of vitamin D, it is important to study the role of low vitamin D availability on the pathogenesis of intestinal diseases. The article analyzes modern literature sources devoted to the study of vitamin D provision in patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome and the effectiveness of cholecalciferol intake for the disorder clinical symptoms. We found that among patients with irritable bowel syndrome, a decrease in vitamin D supply is frequent. In turn, studies evaluating the effectiveness of additional cholecalciferol supplementation in reducing the disorder symptoms show ambiguous results. Larger-scale and well-planned studies are needed to substantiate the therapeutic use of cholecalciferol in irritable bowel syndrome.
