Acute urinary retention is inability to void spontaneously despite a distended urinary bladder. It is a common complication in the early postoperative period. It most frequently occurs after surgical interventions involving the pelvic zone and perineum, but may also develop as a complication of spinal or epidural anesthesia. Standard treatment for this condition includes placement of an indwelling urethral catheter and/or the use cholinomimetic drugs.

The purpose — clinical testing of reflexotherapy as a treatment method for acute urinary retention.

Material and methods. Twenty-six patients, including seven after failed conventional treatment, were treated using our developed method.

Results. The therapy was successful in all patients. The mean number of procedures was 2.48 ± 0.23 per course. No adverse events were recorded.

Conclusions. The proposed reflexotherapy course is an effective and safe method for the treatment of postoperative acute urinary retention.

Key words: acute urinary retention, bladder atony, reflex therapy, acupuncture.
