During the demographic crisis, when every pregnancy should end in the birth of a living and healthy child, the role of fetal examination methods that could prevent perinatal morbidity and mortality is increasing. In this regard, it should be recognized that recently the attention of researchers has again been drawn to archaic and allegedly not entirely reliable methods for assessing the fetus condition. The review discusses the need, within the Demography national project, to revive the method of amnioscopy — visual assessment of the ovum lower pole (fetal membranes, amniotic fluid and their contents are assessed).

Key words: amnioscopy, determination of fetal condition, method for assessing amniotic fluid.
