Regenerative potential of platelet-rich plasma in the treatment of focal osteochondral defects of the knee joint after microfracturing in the experiment

The study objective was to evaluate the effect of microfracturing in combination with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on the regeneration of focal osteochondral defects of the knee joint and to assess the prospects for introducing this method into practice.
Material and methods. The experimental study was conducted on 27 animals (sheep of the Romanov breed, aged from 5 months to 1 year). All animals were conditionally divided into 3 experimental groups; a full-thickness focal osteochondral defect was modeled on the medial condyle of the knee joint of both hind limbs, the left one was considered experimental, the right one was control. In experimental group 1, microfracturing was performed, in group 2 — microfracturing with the introduction of PRP immediately after wound closure, in group 3 — microfracturing and PRP administration 3 weeks after the operation. The results are presented after 1, 3 and 6 months.
Results. A comparative analysis carried out during macroscopic, microscopic and morphometric studies showed that the best results were found in the 3rd experimental group.
Conclusions. The data obtained indicate that the proposed method of treatment is an active stimulator of regenerative processes in cartilage and bone tissue, which may be promising for implementation in the treatment process.
