The article describes the basic principles osteodensitometry ― definition of reduction in bone mineral density in children and adolescents. Basic characteristics of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and recommended indicators for assessment of reduction of bone mineral density in pediatric practice are given. The main physiological aspects of formation of peak bone mass, gender differences in the period of its accumulation are described in the article.

Key words: children, osteodensitometry, bone mineral density, peak bone mass, Z-test.
