Outcomes of ischemic strokes and transient ischemic attack: the role of bone phenotype of posterior cranial fossa

The bone phenotype of the posterior cranial fossa (PCF), which affects cerebrospinal fluid dynamics, can potentially affect cerebral circulation. The connection of clinical outcomes of ischemic strokes to transient ischemic attack with posterior cranial fossa phenotype parameters was analyzed. 152 patients and 40 control subjects were examined. Among patients with acute impairment of the cerebral circulation, in general, reduced linear or volume parameters of the posterior cranial fossa that are not associated with known anomalies of the craniovertebral transition or age-related changes, were detected in 48%. A similar index for strokes with a lethal outcome was 81%. Further investigations with the study of clinical-structural correlations will allow expanding the understanding of the role of the bone phenotype of posterior cranial fossa during cerebrovascular pathology.
