Non-lethal pulmonary embolism in in-hospital Cardiology Department

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a frequent medical emergency in work of doctors of different specialties. In practice of cardiologist it is often necessary to carry out differential diagnostics between PE and acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Similar symptoms for both diseases are chest pain, dyspnea, systemic hypotension, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmias, changes on ECG. Objective ― to characterize the clinical profile of the patients with non-lethal PE hospitalized in Cardiology Department with suspicion on ACS. Material and methods. The article presents analysis of 22 patients (20-78 years old) with non-lethal PE hospitalized with suspicion on ACS during 2 years. Anthropometric data, time of hospitalization, complaints and symptoms, associated diseases and diagnostic methods were assessed. Results. Volume overload of right cameras, disturbances of repolarization on ECG, pulmonary hypertension and nonspecific clinical symptoms are typical for non-lethal PE. Diffuse cyanosis, McGill-White symptom and lung infarct are not informative in these patients. Conclusion. Echocardiography, pulmonary hypertension, changes on ECG and typical clinical symptoms are highly informative for non-lethal PE diagnostics.
