Objective. Based on the study and analysis of literature data, to comprehend the main causes of development of obstetric hemorrhages as an unavoidable threat to maternal health and life, as well as modern approaches to their prevention.
Material and methods. An analysis of modern information on measures to confront obstetric hemorrhages used in the world is carried out. The main search for literature sources was performed in the databases ELibrary, PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library (Cochrane Review) for the period 2014-2018.
Results. The debatable issues of the terminology of obstetric hemorrhages are revealed. The contrasting opinions of various researchers on the effectiveness and safety of the use of various methods are presented. The epidemiology of maternal mortality due to obstetric hemorrhages in the world is described, as well as the dynamics of the maternal mortality ratio in Russia. The modern possibilities for the prevention of obstetric hemorrhages based on their causes are considered. The results of cohort studies of domestic and foreign authors are briefly presented, as well as meta-analyzes devoted to the evaluation of the effectiveness of individual treatment and prophylactic measures.
Conclusion. Obstetric hemorrhages, despite the global measures introduced to prevent them, still represent a real threat to the maternal health and life, and require a search for more effective measures for their prevention and treatment. The list of references which formed the basis for the present review will allow the reader to determine the vector of searching for modern information on obstetric hemorrhages, to compare the outcomes of labor with postpartum hemorrhage in different countries, and to understand the prognostically significant risk factors.
Key words: postpartum hemorrhages, maternal mortality, hypotonic bleeding, placental anomalies, obstetric hemorrhage and coagulation, prevention of obstetric hemorrhage.
