Level of cortisol in the blood of premature infants and its relationship with the course of the newborn period and the five-year catamnesis

The article presents the results of an analysis of blood cortisol levels at the end of the first month of life in preterm infants and its association with certain health parameters in the neonatal period and at the age of 5 years. We studied 150 inpatients medical records from the Department of Neonatal Pathology and 139 electronic outpatient records of the same patients at the age of 5. It was demonstrated the blood cortisol level in preterm infants at the end of the premature period was 128.45 (79.175; 222.725) nmol/l. Children born weighing less than 1000g and/or before 28 weeks of gestation have a higher blood cortisol concentration at the age of 1 month compared to other groups, but this difference is statistically insignificant.
The use of inhaled forms of budesonide in preterm newborns does not have a significant systemic effect; dexamethasone introduction as eye drops in these patients significantly reduced blood cortisol concentration. Cortisol levels at the end of the neonatal period in preterm infants are associated with the risk of ophthalmological pathology at the age of 5 years.
