Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), an acute feral herd infection caused by hantaviruses, is characterized by cyclical course, intoxication syndrome, hemorrhagic events, development of acute kidney injury.

The aim of the study was to assess changes in total cholesterol (TC) in blood serum, high-density lipoproteins (HDL), triglycerides (TG), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) activation in patients with HFRS, depending on gender, severity and platelet count.

Material and methods. 228 patients with HFRS (190 men, 38 women) were examined, control — 56 healthy people corresponding to gender, age and region. The diagnosis of HFRS was established with serological confirmation. Serum VEGF levels was analyzed using multiplex antibody detection kits (Bio-Rad, Hercules, CA, USA). The levels of TC, TG, HDL were determined using the Cholesterol-Novo-200 kit, Triglycerides-Novo, HDL-Cholesterol-Novo-A (Vector-Best, Russia).

Results. In patients with HFRS, high levels of TG and a decrease in HDL were observed, whereas the overall level of TC did not differ from controls. High levels of TG were associated with both the lowest platelet count and high serum VEGF level, as well as with severe HFRS. In addition, men had higher TG levels than women. These combined data increase understanding of the pathogenesis of HFRS and indicate the role of hypertriglyceridemia in the formation of a severe course of the disease.

Key words: hantavirus infection, triglycerides, cholesterol, platelets, vascular endothelial growth factor.
