Incidence of the small intestine microbial balance disorders in patients with irritable bowel syndrome after the new coronavirus infection

The purpose — by using a noninvasive hydrogen breath test, to determine the frequency of small intestine bacterial overgrowth syndrome (BOS) in patients with IBS who have had COVID-19.
Material and methods. The study involved 148 patients suffering from IBS with a predominance of diarrhea. Group I included 88 patients who developed irritable bowel syndrome due to the new coronavirus infection. Group II consisted of 60 patients whose disorder was caused by stress. The control group included 30 relatively healthy subjects. The exhaled hydrogen analyzer LactofaN2 (AMA LLC, Russia) was used to diagnose the small intestine BOS in all patients.
Results. Among patients with irritable bowel syndrome with a predominance of diarrhea who suffered from COVID-19, the majority were diagnosed with bacterial overgrowth syndrome — 76 (86.3%) patients, which was statistically significantly (p < 0.01) more frequent compared to group II — patients with stress-induced disorder (32 patients (53.3%)).
Conclusions. Small intestine bacterial overgrowth syndrome is reported with high frequency in patients with irritable bowel syndrome who have suffered COVID-19. Microbial imbalance in the small intestine among patients in this group is significantly more common than in patients with classical stress-induced irritable bowel syndrome.
