Impact of the duration of anti-relapse therapy on the quality of life and side effect profile in patients after surgical treatment of endometrioid ovarian cysts

Endometrioid ovarian cysts are a common manifestation of genital endometriosis affecting women of reproductive age. Comprehensive treatment for endometriosis implies drug therapy (including postoperative treatment) to reduce the risk of endometrioid cyst recurrence, which largely leads to reduced chronic pelvic pain and improved quality of life.
The purpose — to evaluate the impact of the duration of postoperative therapy with dienogest on quality of life, severity of endometriosis symptoms, and side effect profile in patients after surgical treatment of endometrioid ovarian cysts.
Material and methods. The authors surveyed 43 patients who underwent surgery for endometrioid ovarian cysts between 2023 and 2024 using a Google Forms questionnaire. All women were divided into two comparison groups: the first group included 36 women who used dienogest for three months and the second group included 50 patients who took the drug for one year.
Results. The study showed that patients taking dienogest long-term reported fewer complaints of pain and changes in their psychoemotional state, including mood swings, aggression, and irritability. An assessment of additional complaints reported by women during the survey revealed statistically significant differences between the compared groups. A decrease in libido was not observed in any patient who discontinued dienogest, but was reported in more than a third of patients who continued long-term therapy.
Conclusion. Long-term postoperative therapy with dienogest was significantly more effective in improving quality of life compared to a short-term course. The results proved the feasibility of prolonged use of dienogest, considering the favorable safety profile of the drug.
