The article presents data on topicality, epidemiological significance, and historical aspects of herpes viral infections, as well as its characteristics, classification, means of transmission and replication. The data on reactivation are given, together with the factors promoting the activation of the latent herpes viral infection. The main modern therapy principles are described. The modern classification of interferons is given, the features of their synthesis, mechanism of action and anti-viral efficiency are described. The choronological review is presented of the main trends in studying the issue of the herpes virus transmission during cornea transplantation. The authors’ innovative technique of viral decontamination of donor corneas in eye banks is described.
Key words: herpes simplex virus type I, herpes keratitis, cornea transplantation, cornea storage, viral decontamination.
