The article presents a review of the literature on the pathogenesis of Guillain — Barré syndrome, its association with herpes viruses, modern diagnostic and treatment principles, including plasmapheresis and immunoglobulins. Diagnosis of the disease is clinical, but in complex cases it is necessary to assess the titers of specific IgG and IgM in the blood serum and cerebrospinal fluid or determine the virus DNA in the cerebrospinal fluid. Treatment includes immunoglobulins, plasmapheresis, and antiviral drugs (acyclovir, valacyclovir, famciclovir). Currently, 39 cases Guillain-Barre syndrome association of with the varicella zoster virus are described. The authors provide their own observations with complete recovery of severe tetraparesis.

Key words: Guillain — Barré syndrome, varicella zoster virus, clinical case.
