Ankylosing spondylitis is a disease characterized by lesions of the musculoskeletal system, with the possible involvement of other organs and systems; in particular, it is often accompanied by cardiovascular disease. Ankylosing spondylitis is more common in men, in this connection the the aim of our research was to identify the gender characteristics of cardiovascular lesions in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. The study involved 99 patients, 71 men and 28 women who underwent echocardiography, measurement of the QT interval dispersion on electrocardiography and ankle-brachial index. The results obtained when comparing groups of men and women revealed that in men there is a relationship between the activity of ankylosing spondylitis and diastolic dysfunction of the heart, which, in turn, is accompanied by reduced blood flow in the peripheral vessels. At the same time, in women suffering from ankylosing spondylitis, we found a correlation between functional changes and reduced ejection fraction of the left ventricle, diastolic dysfunction, impaired blood flow in peripheral vessels and increased myocardial electrical instability.
Key words: ankylosing spondylitis, gender features, electrical instability of myocardium, diastolic dysfunction.
