The article reviews the features of capsulotomy in children with congenital cataract. It is noted that cataract surgery in children is associated with a number of features, primarily related to the anatomical characteristics of the structures of infant’s eye lens. In particular, the anterior capsule of the lens is thinner in children than in adults, while its elasticity is higher.
Basing on literature data, it is stated that the most common method for performing capsulotomy is manual circular continuous capsulorhexis, which has a number of difficulties and disadvantages. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a safe and accurate way of performing anterior and posterior capsulorhexis with strictly prescribed parameters. The femtosecond laser offers automated accurate actions at the main stage of the operation for removing cataracts with predictable results. In the opinion of many authors, the use of femtoscopic assistance at the capsulotomy stage provides a significant improvement in the anatomical and morphological parameters of capsulorhexis, which is expressed by an improvement in the circularity, uniformity of the edge, and a decrease in the deviation from the prescribed size. However, further scientific research is needed in this direction.
Key words: congenital cataract, cataract surgery, capsulotomy, femtolaser.
