Prediction of adverse outcomes and identification of risks of motor, mental, speech development, formation of neurological and somatic pathologies in premature infants is one of the urgent tasks at all stages of nursing. Risk factors for premature birth, including those with deep prematurity, are identified, based on the study of case history, clinical and instrumental examination and observation of babies in the first year of life. The dynamics of the structural brain defects is described, which is more severe in babies born with very low or extremely low body weight, as well as its interrelation with the baby’s clinical neurological status and development. The health features in the prenatal period are defined, depending on the degree of prematurity, as well as their role in the formation of disability in the first year of life.

Key words: premature infants, babies with very low and extremely low body mass, risk factors for disability, developmental disorders.
