An important task of modern refractive surgery is not only obtaining high quality vision, but also minimizing such side effects as dry eye syndrome. A comparative analysis of the state of tear film and corneal epithelium in patients after SMILE and LASIK made it clear that removal of the lenticular through a small access makes it possible to increase the thickness of the corneal epithelium in a shorter time, to preserve and even improve the condition of the tear film, which may be due primarily to the aimed femtolaser energy on the deep layers of the cornea, as well as the technology of performing the operation, which excludes damaging mechanical and laser effects on the subepithelial nerve corneal plexus.

Key words: SMILE, LASIK, dry eye syndrome, corneal epithelium, coefficient of surface tension of tear fluid.
