The aim of the study was to evaluate the pupillary response characteristics among patients with type II diabetes mellitus complicated by autonomic neuropathy. We used certified digital automated binocular pupillometric complex KSRZRts (produced by RIHOPHE FMBA Russia, St. Petersburg), which allows carrying out binocular dynamic pupillomometry. Pupil diameter and latent period (the onset of the pupillary reaction), rate of constriction and the rate of pupil dilatation, as well as the amplitude narrowing of the pupils were decreased, time of narrowing of the pupils was increased in 43 patients aged 39 to 60 years who had a history of type II diabetes mellitus complicated by autonomic neuropathy. The pupillary reaction was weakened. These changes indicate abnormalities occurring in the efferent parasympathetic and sympathetic ways and are a sign of the manifestation of diabetic autonomic neuropathy. Dynamic binocular pupillomatometry can be used as an additional prompt, non-invasive method for detecting early signs of disorders of the autonomic nervous system in type II diabetes mellitus.
Key words: binocular pupillometric complex, pupil response parameters, type II diabetes mellitus, diabetic autonomic neuropathy
