Etiological structure of acute intestinal infections in patients hospitalized to an infectious hospital

Acute infectious diarrhea remains relevant, since the incidence of this group of diseases has remained at approximately the same level for many years.
Objective ― to study the etiological structure of acute intestinal infection depending on the season in different age groups of patients.
Material and methods. 6733 medical records of inpatients hospitalized to the Republican Clinical Hospital of Infectious Diseases (RCHID) with a diagnosis of acute intestinal infection from January 2018 to March 2019 were analyzed. The research is observational, descriptive, and retrospective by design.
Results and conclusions. It was possible to identify the causative agent of acute intestinal infections in 58% (2819/6733) cases. Rotavirus gastroenteritis was recorded in 32.4% of the examined patients (2180/6733), salmonellosis ― in 7.5% (505/6733), other enteropathogenic viruses (noro-, adeno-, astro-, enteroviruses) ― in 3.6% (243/6733). Shigella caused acute diarrhea in 0.6% of patients (40/6733), Escherichia ― in 0.2% (14/6733). Modern acute respiratory infections maintain their «seasonality»: the winter-spring period is characterized by an increase in the incidence of rota- and norovirus infections, and the summer-autumn period is characterized by salmonellosis. Each age group of patients has differences in the structure of the main pathogens of acute intestinal infections, which must be taken into account when choosing a rational starting therapy.
