The aim of the research was to study the effectiveness of glaucoma neuroopticopathy treatment by the method of endonasal electrophoresis of Emoxypin and parabulbar injections of this medication.
Patients and methods:
A total of 106 patients with glaucoma neuroopticopathy participated in the study. Of these, 42 patients comprised the main group who received the researched medication by the method of endonasal electrophoresis: 0.5 ml of Emoxypin into each nasal duct; 64 patients formed the comparison group who received 0.5 ml of 1% Emoksipin solution through parabulbar injections.
In the gender aspect, there were 64 women and 42 men, aged 39 to 76 years (mean age 56.6 ± 8.2 years).
The studied medication Emoxypin — 1% solution for injections, in 1 ml ampoules,— was introduced by the method of endonasal electrophoresis into each nasal duct by 0.5 ml once a day. For comparison, the patients were examined who received 0.2-0.5 ml of 1% Emoxypin solution for injections once a day or every other day through parabulbar injections.
The ophthalmic examination included: study of visual acuity, field of vision, visual fatigue, state of bulbar microcirculation (general conjunctival index — OCI). In addition, electrophysiological studies were conducted: the critical flicker frequency (CFF) and the electric sensitivity of the eye (ES).
Data processing was carried out with Excel electronic database using the Statistica 7.0. and MedCalc software. The accepted threshold of statistical significance is 0.05.
Results:
In the course of the study it was proved that, for patients with glaucoma neuroopticopathy, Emoxypin 0.1% solution for injections is no less effective when administered with endonasal electrophoresis than through parabulbar injections and has a similar safety profile and tolerability.
Conclusion:
The estimation of effectiveness of Emoxypin administered by endonasal electrophoresis in glaucoma neuroopticopathy has shown its significant positive therapeutic effect for visual functions restoration.
None of the authors has a financial interest in the materials or methods presented. The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest.
