The study presents the early results of treatment of 9 patients with pathology of the articular cartilage of the knee joint using carbon rods, which are a polymer composite material from interwoven carbon fiber strands. Evidence of using these implants are chondral and osteochondral lesions of femoral condyles. The technique of installation, selection of the number of implants, postoperative management is described. The result on the IKDC scale before surgery averaged 31.3 points, for a period of 12 months – 67.8. On the WOMAC scale, the average result before surgery was 49.25, for a period of 12 months — 28.7. According to MRI, after surgery, the closure of a cartilage defect with the presence of implants (carbon rods) in the area of damage was observed. In one patient, 7 months after implantation, revision arthroscopy was performed for damage to the anterior cruciate ligament. There was coverage of the zone of cartilage defect of the external condyle of the femur with coarse fibrous tissue. During the observation, up to 12 months, no serious complications such as synovitis or allergic reactions were observed. Research will be continued in order to accumulate more observations in the longer terms.
Key words: knee joint, pathology of articular cartilage, treatment, carbon rods.
