Objective: to determine the link between the elemental status of blood of full-term newborns and their mothers and the quality of drinking water in the city of Kazan.

Material and methods. The article presents the results of a study of the elemental status of blood plasma of full-term newborns and their mothers in retrospect using a database of authors from 1996 and 2012 on the elements Mg, Zn, Cr and Sr.

Statistical processing of databases was carried out in Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of Kazan Federal University, in the Exel software environment. The group average continuous characters for the grouping character “year” were compared by elements magnesium, zinc, chromium and strontium.

Evaluation of the quality of drinking water was carried out according to the results of studies of average annual concentrations of the studied elements, performed on the basis of the accredited laboratory of Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Republic of Tatarstan.

Results. Decrease in Mg, Zn, Sr and increase in plasma Cr concentration in newborns and their mothers in 2012 were established during statistical processing of the databases. Decrease in the concentration of the elements Mg, Zn, Sr in the blood plasma of full-term newborns and their mothers is consistent with the wide transition of the population to the use of post-treated drinking water with an extremely low content of micro and macro elements. It has been suggested that the increase in plasma concentration of chromium in blood plasma with high consumption of chromium is associated with food. Further joint monitoring of newborns, their mothers and potential sources of influence is proposed for a clearer understanding of the causes affecting the processes of formation of the elemental status.

Key words: elemental status, newborns, mothers, drinking water.
