Coagulation disorders in different periods of COVID-19 infection in children with inflammatory bowel diseases

SARS-CoV-2 infection often leads to coagulation disorders such as hypercoagulation and thrombotic microangiopathy. In children, these changes may be asymptomatic. It is relevant to study the duration of these changes in hemostasis after the clinical manifestations of COVID-19 are resolved.
The purpose — to assess the frequency and duration of hypercoagulation in children with IBD after COVID-19.
Material and methods. 60 children with IBD after COVID-19 were examined. The comparison group included 30 children with IBD who had not been infected with coronavirus. We performed a standard laboratory and instrumental examination and determined the number of platelets, fibrinogen levels, activated partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, Quick prothrombin index, and blood D-dimer.
Results. During the first three months after the COVID-19 infection, there were pronounced hemostatic disorders. The APTT and PT values were significantly reduced in children with IBD who had had COVID-19 compared to those who had not. In the main group, there was a significant increase in the D-dimer level. In total, 22 children (45.8%) were found to have hypercoagulation in the early post-COVID period, based on at least one of the parameters studied.
Conclusions. The hypercoagulation induced by the infection developed and persisted for 3 months in almost half of the children (45.8%), then the proportion of such children progressively decreased and by the end of the first year of the post-infection period, all indicators, except for the D-dimer level, were normalized.
