The article presents a review of the literature on the impact of changes in the elastic properties of arteries on hemodynamic processes. The structures of the walls of blood vessels, and the factors that determine their viscoelastic properties were considered. The reasons for changes in arterial stiffness, methods for evaluating the elastic properties of the arterial wall and the entire arterial system as a whole are shown. We describe the hemodynamic changes associated with increased arterial stiffness, and their role in the formation of hypertension and cardiovascular events.
Key words: stiffness of the arterial wall, integral stiffness of the arterial system, pulse wave velocity, augmentation index, pulse pressure, arterial hypertension.
