 Purpose. The paper describes actual views on catatonia within the autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

Materials and methods. The author analyzed 43 foreign research articles on catatonia and autism issues (from 2000 to 2018).

Results. It is shown that in the recent year’s catatonia has been conceptualized as a separate diagnostic cluster registered in the modern diagnostic classifications. The issues of differential diagnosis are discussed. Special attention is paid to catatonia in ASD and the necessity for interdisciplinary diagnostic approaches to find out the cause of the disorders. To help pediatricians to identify catatonic symptoms, the use of special questionnaires for all patients with ASD is recommended.

Conclusion. The significant prevalence of catatonic disorders in patients with ASD determines the practical importance of their timely diagnosis, since no effective treatment methods have been found for autism, while catatonia is much better treatable but poorly recognized.
