The article presents the author’s own observations over 16 newborns with atrioventricular block of various degrees. Three patients were diagnosed with Frederick syndrome, which had developed on the 2nd-3rd day of life. Two children with congenital heart defect developed into complete congenital block. The article also describes a rare case of a family form of congenital complete atrioventricular block in two newborns from the same family. The observations illustrate the need for timely prenatal diagnosis of this condition to make a decision about appropriate management of pregnancy and labour in a specialized clinic because of unfavourable prognosis for infants, to exclude concomitant cardiac organic disease of the fetus and to examine the mother and the child simultaneously in order to diagnose latent course of SLE in the mother and cardiac forms of neonatal lupus syndrome in the newborn.

Key words: newborn, atrioventricular block, Frederick syndrome.
