Analysis of the results of stenting in patients with benign and malignant stenoses of the esophagus and stomach, as well as esophageal respiratory fistulas

Abstract. Palliative management of inoperable patients with malignant tumors of the esophagus and stomach remains a difficult task and often requires an interdisciplinary approach to achieve optimal effectiveness. Currently, endoscopic stenting has become an established practice in the treatment of malignant esophageal stenosis, improving the quality of life of incurable patients. With the development of many different esophageal stents, recent studies show that esophageal stenting is useful in treating refractory benign dysphagia, and is also effective in achieving separation of esophago-respiratory fistula. The article presents the results of implantation of esophageal stents in 219 patients with malignant stenosis of the esophagus and stomach, as well as malignant esophago-respiratory fistulas. Complications and methods for their endoscopic resolution are considered. Also, own experience of implantation of esophageal stents of various manufacturers is presented. The analysis of life expectancy after stenting in 176 incurable patients with malignant stenosis of the esophagus and stomach was performed. In addition, the article presents the experience of implantation of biodegradable stents in three patients with benign esophageal stenosis.
