Taking into account that coarctation of aorta is a life-threatening condition often causing a lethal outcome, the aim of our work was to study peculiarities of the course of aorta coarctation in infants, children and adolescents, to compare the results of balloon dilatation and surgical treatment for the defect and, based on the findings received, to develop, test and put into practice an algorithm for follow-up of children with CoA in the Republic of the Crimea.

Material and methods. The article presents the results of clinical examination of 100 infants and children with coarctation of the aorta aged 0 to 18 years before and at different time after the surgical correction.

Results. It has been established that balloon dilatation is preferable in infants with critical coarctation of aorta, providing good and satisfactory results. An algorithm for follow-up of children with CoA has been developed, tested and put into practice in the Crimea.

Conclusion. The introduced algorithm has contributed to higher efficiency of follow-ups and better diagnosis of congenital heart defects, prenatal diagnosis in particular, which made it possible to operate on children at the most appropriate time. Incidence of disability and mortality has decreased; percentage of post-operative complications has reduced; the quality of life of children has improved.

Key words: children, coarctation of aorta, follow-ups, algorithm.
