The article presents the results of the analysis of health and vitamin D status among infants living in an industrial megalopolis. The study revealed a high frequency of low vitamin D level among infants (49.2 %); the best indicators of vitamin D supply were found among children of the first year of life. The authors emphasize the role of breast feeding and timely introduction of complementary foods in achieving a normal vitamin D level (OR = 5.2; ДИ 95 % [1.8 ÷ 14.4]). The results show a negative impact of infectious anamnesis of mothers during pregnancy on vitamin D provision of a child (OR = 2.4 ДИ 95 % [1.19 ÷ 4.85]). We noted the close connection between the low provision of vitamin D among infants and the increased incidence of acute respiratory diseases (OR = 10.7 ДИ 95 % [2.3 ÷ 48.8]). The optimal prophylactic dose of vitamin D providing normal levels of 25 (OH) D3 in the blood serum of infants is 1000 IU. The study proved the effectiveness of prescribing a prophylactic dose of vitamin D (500 IU) during 1 month for children of the third year of life to improve the vitamin D supply: disappearing of vitamin D deficiency, normalization of calcium metabolism. The results of the study contribute to an understanding of the clinical value of vitamin D and the development of new approaches to preventing vitamin D deficiency in children.
Key words: infants, vitamin D, serum 25(OH)D3 level.
