The problem of vitamin D provision is relevant for the population of the whole planet. The most vulnerable categories of people are pregnant and lactating women, infants and young children, adolescents, elderly people. The article provides an overview of the importance of vitamin D for human health. Criteria of its insufficiency and deficiency are given, the factors influencing the supply with the specified vitamin are described, as well as data on the content of calciferol in unenriched and fortified food products. The possibilities and problems of using food sources for the prevention of vitamin D deficiency are highlighted. The necessity of increasing the level of knowledge of the population about the role of calciferol in the prevention of various diseases is shown.
Key words: vitamin D, dietary sources of calciferol, provision with vitamin D, vitamin D-enriched products.
