The aim of the study was to define the possibility of using a collagen substance CollaGuard as a protective barrier between the polypropylene mesh implant and abdominal organs. The substance is a sterile bioabsorbable membrane consisting of refolded equine collagen. Experiments on rats were performed, technique and methodology of operations were elaborated. Then 31 operations in patients with ventral hernias with different localization were performed. After intra-abdominal hernia repair, intra- abdominal plastics with mesh implant was performed, delimiting it with CollaGuard membrane from the abdominal cavity. Serious complications in the abdominal cavity organs and the surgical wound were not observed.
Key words: ventral hernia, CollaGuard, collagen plate, intra-abdominal plastic.
