Surgical treatment of patients with acute mediastinitis

The article analyzes the experience of treating 28 patients with acute mediastinitis of different etiology. Of the causes of acute mediastinitis the first place is occupied by different kinds of esophagus damage (50%), the second place — odontogenic and paratonsillar abscesses (32.1%). Due to inflammatory processes in the mediastinum preference was given to extra pleural approaches (62%). Satisfactory treatment results were obtained in 26 patients (92.8%). Lethal outcome had two (7.2%) patients. Main causes of lethal outcomes were sepsis and progression of mediastinitis.
