Poor vision limits the physical capabilities of a child, reduces the quality of life. Children suffer from the need to wear glasses, their communication with their age-mates is hampered, progress is reduced, school anxiety increases.

Objective: to assess the state of vision in schoolchildren and the factors affecting it.

Material and methods. At the first stage, a survey of schoolchildren’s parents was carried out: a questionnaire on the presence of symptoms of dry eye syndrome in children, which also included questions about the visual load. At the 2nd stage, a survey of schoolchildren on the same questionnaire and a diagnostic examination was conducted.

Results and discussion. According to the results of the survey, all schoolchildren were divided into 3 groups: group 1 — with glasses or lenses; group 2 — without glasses or lenses, but with uncorrected visual acuity (UVA) < 0.8; group 3 — without glasses or lenses, but with UVA > 0.8. The visual load of the 2, 3, 4 grade schoolchildren increases with the growth of children, while parents in all age groups are not fully aware of how much time their children spend with a phone, computer, or TV. The increase of 2 and 3 grades schoolchildren’s visual load is mainly due to TVs and telephones, and schoolchildren of 4 grade only to telephones. Symptoms of dry eye syndrome (DES) are more pronounced in children with greater visual load.

Conclusion. The number of children who do not have glasses or lenses and who have UVA > 0.8 decreases from grade 2 to grade 4, while the number of children with UVA < 0.8 increases 2 times. The reason for wearing glasses in most children is myopia.

Key words: refraction, schoolchildren, vision, myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism.
