Analysis of available scientific and educational literature showed that to date, despite the growing popularity of the method, combined spinal-epidural anesthesia (CSEA) with the epidural volume extension (EVE), it is not properly used in anesthesia of abdominal surgery, including hernia surgery in Russia. However, literature contains data proving the promising prospects of using CSEA with EVE. Most often, this method is used in obstetrics and gynecology, where it is valuable for reducing the risk of intraoperative hypotension, which threatens equally mother and fetus. Based on these data, we can say that the application of CSEA with EVE is a promising method of anesthesia in the surgical treatment of hernias compared to standard methods of anesthesia.
Key words: abdominal surgery, combined spinal-epidural anesthesia, epidural volume extension.
