Pathological changes in bone tissue of rats with experimental osteoporosis

The article presents the results of an experiment on adult Vistar rats, who took haloperidol in therapeutic doses (intraperitoneal) and dimephosphonum with xydifon (per os) during 90 days. Prior and after the experiment, levels of total calcium and alkaline phosphatase in blood serum and oxyproline in urine were determined. Postmortal X-ray of the spine bone was carried out. The analysis of the experiment showed the reduction of alkaline phosphatase and oxyproline levels in rats, who took haloperidol together with dimephosphonum and xydifon; reduction of levels of total calcium (in comparison with rats on the monotherapy of haloperidol). In 30% of rats who took a neuroleptic drug, pathologic fractures, thinning of cortical lamina, foci of subcortical osteoporosis and clearing zones in the spongeous bone were found with roentgen research. Conclusions were made about an expressed osteoporosis-induction effect of haloperidol therapeutic doses in rats, as well as the positive influence of dimephosphonum and xydifon on bone tissue metabolism in experiment on rats.
