Vitamin D deficiency is associated with health risks including the cardiovascular diseases, cancer, metabolic syndrome, strength of bones, autism, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, mental health problems. High percentage of women of reproductive age are deficient in vitamin D; pregnant women are at even higher risk of deficiency. It is proved that vitamin D deficiency causes the infertility and also affects the gestation course and health of descendants (prenatally and in future). Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy is associated with problems of placental insufficiency, risk increase of emergency caesarean section, birth of children with low body weight, gestational diabetes, premature delivery, preeclampsia, increased inflammatory response and endothelial dysfunction. Vitamin D deficiency in fetus depends on the content of the maternal vitamin D. Medicamentous correction of vitamin D deficiency can have a huge impact on the health care strategy in the prevention of various diseases.

Key words: vitamin D deficiency, reproductive health, gestation course, placental insufficiency, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes.
