The problem of adequate breast reconstruction up to the natural or pre-operative level after the surgical treatment of breast cancer is still very topical nowadays. Though excellent results are reached in restoration of breast contours, shape, volume and symmetry, the visible postoperative scar remains the only element that demonstrates the performed breast cancer surgery. The article views the stages of breast surgery development, the transition from the classical to the organ-sparing and oncoplastic, skin-sparing and NAC-sparing radical mastectomy.
Key words: breast cancer, organ-sparing surgery, oncoplastic surgery, skin-sparing mastectomy, nipple-areola complex, NAC-sparing mastectomy, breast reconstruction, complications, incisions.
